MIRMS Report By Maddie, Ian, Ryen, Mo, and Stephanie Mentor Max Today was mostly about working on the presentations that we will be giving on Friday. We also continued to work on the website for a little bit. The one activity we did today was about how stress and heart rate are related. We checked our starting heart rate, and then did three stressful activities to see how it changed our heart rate. The first two trials we tried to support a water bottle using paper. Then physical activities and finished up by creating a graph to see the change! JAM Report By Jazmyne, Abby, and Maya Mentor Hana Our favorite activity today was the breakout and finishing our website. During the breakout we had to make algebraic shapes and find out their names, after we did that we had to do some coding. Once we finished making all of the shapes, plus doing all of the coding, we had to make a sling-shot. The person with the most tin foil balls into the boxes wins. Maya's favorite part was finishing the websites. We each did ours on different topics. Maya's was about wild animals, Abby's was about domestic animals, and Jazmyne's was about teaching music. Slime Surfers By Connor, Gjon, Lucas, and Zaki Mentor Josh Today we started off with the most thing we’ve done at Discovery Academy so far! One of the Mentor groups had made an activity where we had to make slime out of glue, borax, and water and then shoot the slime out of a catapult we made out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and spoons. It was amazing! We protoyped a few different varieties of slime by changing the amounts of different ingredients in it. After that we had lunch and went outside where some of us played a huge game of ultimate frisbee. When we came back inside we finished our career presentations and started working on our poster for Friday. Discovery Squad Squad Skurfers: Our SLIMEY blog By Joey, Miles, and Ania Mentor Jarod Today we got to go through the last mentor rotation. For this we made slime! We use glue water and borax to make slime. Joey made a yellow slime, Miles made a green slime, and Nia made a light orange slime! It was a lot of fun and we were able to take it home too! With the slime we made catapults to launch it a targets. We hit 100 points!!! The rest of the day we finished our websites and our career projects.

Brain GamesBy Francisco, Michael, Dominic, and Austin Mentor Tyeler This morning we started out with introducing ourselves to each other because we got two new scholars today! Dominic and Austin joined us after going on vacation last week. We got to design websites today and take personality tests to learn more about ourselves. The results of our personality tests will be presented on Friday when we get to talk about careers we want to do. After lunch, we went outside and flew kites! It was so cool to see how high they went and we were happy to just run around. This was Francisco and Michael’s favorite part about today. Afterwards, we came inside and built our own windmills. We were given materials and got to design it on our own. Austin and Dominic really liked building and creating it on their own and this was their favorite activity today. We ended the day writing this blog post and working on our paper roller coaster from yesterday. Austin and Dominic say HI MOM! Rebuilding CraigathonBy Lucas, Zaki, Connor, Gjon Mentor Josh So we mentioned in a previous blog post that we made a robot named Craigathan that walked………. Well….we might have dropped him…..so some of today was spent rebuilding him better and stronger than before! Today we also made some fun websites on Weebly for a few hours and after lunch we went outside and flew kites to introduce our wind turbine activity. Earlier in the day we had a hair raising activity with a Vandergraph where our hair stood on end because of static electricity! Strong WindmillsBy Max, Maddie, Ian, Ryen, Mo, Stephanie (MMIRMS) Mentor Max Today, we made windmills out of limited materials. We were given cardboard, tape, pvc pipe, dowel rods, and skewers. We were tasked with lifting up as many pennies as possible with our windmill. We ended up lifting up 75 pennies with just the wind! (a fan) it was our awesome design that was able to lift up so much weight. Our seeds in a glove are finally starting to grow which is really sweet too. An Electrical and Kiteful DayBy Andrew, Aiden, Jacob, and Trey Mentor Tori Today was super fun without many new things to do. The favorite for Jacob and Trey was the windmill project. We were able to make a working one that lifted 70 pennies at once. This was super cool to see and fix to make it stronger and stronger. Aiden's favorite part today was the electricity. This is because he was able to get "shocked" by a current. It was very weak, but he was able to just barely feel it. Andrew's favorite was the kite flying. He was a pro! He got his super high in the air and running super fast with it. Websites, Weebly, and the WindBy Ethan, Matthew, Damian, and Jordan
Mentor Amber In Discovery Academy, we tried to make a wind turbine. The goal of the wind turbine was to lift a bucket filled with pennies using the power of wind. All we had to use was PVC pipe, cardboard, foam, tape, hot glue, and a variety of sticks. Overall our design was quite successful, even causing some resistance if we tried to stop it from spinning. We also created websites using Weebly. Websites are useful for everything, such as to make money, for your job, to recruit people, for fun, to share information, and much more. Some of the websites we created were penguin-themed, Godzilla-themed, and one about philosophy. It's a useful skill to learn, and especially since some of our careers are going to involve things very similar. "Warco" the RobotBy Emee, Katrina and Andrew Mentor Hana Today we reflected on career day, we asked questions about our career choices. Although Emee wasn't as energetic as usual, breakfast gave her a spring in energy. After breakfast we made microscopes, which we used to inspect objects we found in the courtyard. When we made the microscope, Katrina pulled the strings out of our magnifying glasses that Andrew had carefully tied (Oops!). Later we switched to physics where we learned how to make a roller coaster made out of paper. Interrupted about half way through, we went to lunch. We finished lunch and quickly took this opportunity to work on our robot. We finished it after about a week of hard work and named it Warco. We again went back to working on our paper roller coasters, in hope of finishing it today. Microscopes and Roller CoastersBy Francisco and Michael Mentor Tyeler Today we built a microscope out of cardboard, a magnifying glass, tape and string. It was fun to see how a plant could be magnified using only a few materials in the morning. Our favorite project today was building a paper roller coaster! We spent three hours trying to make it super cool! It had two loops, a funnel, 8 curves, was almost 9 feet long and was over a 150 centimeters tall! We loved designing the roller coaster and testing different ideas together. This was the best project so far and we enjoyed it a lot. We can’t wait to keep working on it throughout the week. Roller CoastersBy Ayel, Ryan, Josiah, Anthony, and Sean Mentor Pete AHHHHHHHH!!!!!! That's the sound we make as our marble races down the roller coaster. The roller coaster challenge was challenging at first but we got the concept down after the first couple of tries. We liked the engineering constraints because it helped us not go totally crazy with our build but later made the activity kind of boring. We decided to leave ours and help other groups make their builds crazy. Our roller coaster was a nice model for everyone else to look at and to compare their design to ours. We looked at our seeds today. The colored cotton ball plants are growing much faster and bigger than the plain white colored cotton balls. We think the colored ones are growing faster because the color is absorbing more energy. Sincerely, The Disco BEASTS Career Exploration and MoreBy Aiden, Andrew, Jacob, and Trey
Mentor Tori Today we started to narrow down the career choice for our project. Andrew is thinking about an author/writer, Jacob- doctor, Aiden - Vet, and Trey -vet or marine biologist. These are still up in the air and between things. The roller coaster was our favorite part today. Even though it was fun, we had trouble getting the marble to stay on the track and go through a loop. The microscope was very challenging, and we weren't able to finish it. A Tour of the Solar SystemBy Michael, Jazmyne, Maya, Abby and Fancisco Mentor Hana We used VR glasses and went into the solar system! We also went into the international space station. The solar system was in two different parts, not to scale and around the sizes compared to the sun. It showed us how scientist envision the sun around 5 billion years ago before our solar system was even around. We learned that it takes Neptune about 157.75 earth years to orbit the sun, it also take mercury around 88 earth days to orbit the sun. We learned that each planet has a different amount of moons. Also that we have an asteroid belt and a star belt and final a ice belt. We learned that the space station has a dinning table that holds every thing you need to eat. We had a lot of fun! Lost in s p a c eBy Ethan, Damian, and Matthew Mentor Amber In Discovery Academy today, we journeyed into space. We saw our solar system and the Milky Way galaxy. We learned a lot about our specific solar system, such as that it means that our planets are in a system that is centered around the Sun. We also discovered an idea about how it was formed, by a bunch of gases and debris combining and forming our Sun and planets. We now know where we are in our galaxy in a minor arm in Orion's spur. The Sun is huge! It takes up 99.9% of the mass in our solar system! The huge amount of mass makes it so that the planets orbit around the Sun because of the massive gravitational pull. We wrapped our activity by taking a quick trip through the International Space Station. Compasses and VRBy Gaby, Tammy, and Hannah Mentor Jasmine We started our day off by looking at the different careers we wanted to go into. All of us are actually looking at some sort of medical profession which was pretty cool. After that we went outside and learned how to orienteer. Basically we got to learn how to use and read a compass. The best part about today is that we got to visit space! Using VR headsets we got really close to the sun and all the different planets in the Milky Way Galaxy. There are so many stars in space it looks so beautiful. We saw the asteroid belt and even visited the International Space Station! A Far Out Career DayBy Connor, Zaki, and Lucas
Mentor Josh We can’t believe that today was the last day of our first week of Discovery Academy. Camp is going by so fast and we’re having so much fun! Today we started off the day with a super awesome virtual reality field trip to space!! We got to see the planets, the formation of our solar system, and inside the International Space Station. We finished off our day with career day. We met a ton of people with interesting STEM careers including a professional hacker! As fun as camp is we can’t wait to sleep in over the weekend because we’re all exhausted!! Catapults and Slime!By Ethan, Damian, and Matthew Mentor Amber The best activity of the day was creating slime and catapults. We started the activity by making catapults. The catapults were constructed using popsicle sticks, spoons, tape, hot glue, and rubber bands. Matthew and Ethan's team constructed a catapult that used a involved pulling back a spoon and launched it. It looked sort of like a temple from an ancient culture. Damian's team tried to build a trebuchet. The slime was made using Borax, water, and glue. We learned that more glue made it stickier, more Borax made it harder, and more water made it very large and liquidy. After we concocted our slimes we took turns using our launcher to launch the slime at various types of targets. Our goal was to earn the most points from our launchers. Even though that was the goal, nobody really kept track of the points because everyone was really involved in the slime-making. Overall, the activity was a lot of fun and we learned a lot. Scratchback BluesBy Zaki, Gjon, Connor, and Lucas Mentor Josh Today was a suuuuuuuuper busy day. We managed to fit tons of different activities into our time here but our favorite one was coding with Scratch. Scratch is a website where you can create your own programs through prewritten pieces of code. We really enjoyed it because we were able to make our own projects including our own inside jokes. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to spend as much time on it as we wanted to because the mentors had prepared a ton of fun activities for us! Computers and HyperbubblesBy Joey, Ayva, Miles, and Ania Mentor Jacob On thursday we did lots of activities on the computers. First, we went onto a coding website called scratch and created coded clips and games which we can do at home!. Then, we did a breakout room where we made 3D shapes and and used materials to make slingshots to do different activities to ‘escape room’. Then we had mini burgers for lunch. After lunch we used math and 3D shapes to help us make hyper bubbles in cubes which represents the shape for a^4! We went back to the mentor activities and we made solar ovens out of a box and aluminum foil. Then we had freetime. Scratch ProgrammingBy Anthony, Ayel, Sean, Josiah, and Ryan
Mentor Pete I really have an itch. I think I might SCRATCH it! LOL so puny! Today we had an activity called scratch. It was totally awesome. Scratch is a online activity where we can create basic code to make 2d or 3d animations. It was so much fun because we can have multiple sprites in one animation doing multiple things. The sprites range from people to cartoons or animals. The best thing is that its totally free and I can do it at home with our parents permission. Sincerely, The Disco BEASTS Aquatic Benthic MacroinvertebratesBy Ayva, Joey, Miles, and Ania Mentor Jarod Today we went to Lily Cache Creek, we tired to find aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates which are tiny animals that you can see with your eyes that live in the bottom of creeks. We caught a crawfish and their babies. The babies were super small and clear. The worst thing we caught was the leeches, they were slimy and nasty!! After we came from the creek, we went and got free pizza and it was amazing! Plants and CreaturesBy Maya, Jazmyne, and Abby Mentor Hana Our favorite thing that we did in Discovery Academy today was the Water Walk. On the way to the creek, we learned about different types of plants such as nightshade and poison ivy and even got to eat mulberries, which tasted sweet. We got to the creek and walked inside to discover many different types of creatures hidden beneath the rocks. We counted many creatures such as leeches and damselfly nymphs. While our shoes were soaking wet, we got to have a lot of fun. We also got to eat pizza and snacks afterward. Large CrawfishBy Ryen, Stephanie, Maddie, Ian, and Mo Mentor Max Today was the day we went to the creek. Most of us got in the water, but we all got to experience some critters! We found crayfish, two leeches, and a lot of other smaller bugs. We also got to see other groups catches. One group had a giant crayfish that was probably 6 inches long. We also calculated the speed of the flowing creek, and did some tests on the water. We then walked to a place to eat some really good pizza. We ended the day with the mentors lessons. MIRMMS had yet another good day. Our Favorite ThingsBy Reiley, Gannon, and Nikki
Mentor Caleb Today we took our water walk and had our mentor lessons for the first groups. Reiley's favorite part of the day was the water walk, and she liked getting to catch the creatures and observe them. Gannon said her favorite part of the day was getting to catch the creatures and walk along the stream. Nikki said her favorite part was observing the habitats along the walk. Nikki also liked testing the water sample from the creek for pH and alkalinity. DuPage township bought us pizza for lunch and we were very thankful for that today. Our Favorite ThingsBy Michael, Francisco, and Sean Mentor Tyeler Today, we started with circuit boards and took turns choosing different designs. We all got to eat breakfast together and then made some more circuit designs. After that we got the chance to launch water rockets which was very fun! We learned that making a cardboard cone and using a litre of water was the best way to make it go the highest. This was Sean’s favorite project today because he found it very interesting learning about how that related to real rockets. After the rockets, we came in and ate lunch in the courtyard. Today we played a new game called “capture the football” after lunch. Our next activity was taking a personality test and learning about ourselves. Our results will be presented in our career presentation at the end of camp! This was Michael’s favorite activity today because he really enjoyed working individually to learn more about himself and his future. Our last project today was working on building a robot! We decided to build the mars rover. This was Francisco’s favorite project today because he really enjoys building things. We finished the day off writing this blog post together, checking on our seeds from yesterday, and continuing working on the robot! Prototyping Water RocketsBy Josiah, Ayel, Ryan, and Anthony Mentor Pete We started off our day with snap circuits. It was confusing yet really fun! We learned about simple circuits like series and parallel. After that we went outside to do water rockets! It was tedious and explosive. We got our rocket to shoot over 60 feet in the air. We made changes to our rocket using rapid prototyping. We added 1 thing at a time and ended up adding a nose cone, wings, and more water. Our wings lost stability while filling up our rocket with water because of spillage. Lunch could still improve a lot more. The pizza is starting to get old and the other choices are just ok. After lunch we took a personalty test. The test was ok but we were kind of surprised by the results. The careers that the test said might fit us in the future didn't ever really cross our minds. We don't know right now if we'll go into a job that was listed but only time will tell. Lastly, we worked on robots. The robots were really fun and cool. We started to make a lunar rover. it was nice to be able to move around the room and collect the pieces that we need to complete the project. Sincerely, The Disco Beasts Snap CircuitsBy Gjon, Lucas, Zaki, and Connor Mentor Josh Today was an amazing day! We launched water rockets, built robots, played with snap circuits, and started our Career Presentations! Our favorite part was definitely the Snap Circuits. It was so much fun to be able to make functioning circuits that started fans and played noises. Today was such a good day, that there was nothing that we didn’t enjoy! By taking a personality survey, we were able to check out some of the careers that may fit into our personality types and we started doing a little research on potential careers! We can’t wait for the rest of the camp. :) Fun Challenges and New FriendsBy Tammy, Hannah, and Gaby
Mentor Jasmine We started the day off with snap circuits. Instead of the doing the first couple of projects which were simpler, we wanted to do the most challenging ones that played two sounds as well as launched the fan. After that, we went outside to launch water rockets. Our group ran into a problem while launching the rocket because the soda bottle was faulty so as a result our data was slightly skewed. During lunch we had a super fun time getting to know one another. Different people from different groups came to sit with us and we got to know each other even more. We found out each others favorite movies, music, as well as each other's heritage and spoken languages. Some of us spoke the same languages which was a surprise! After lunch we spent the time getting to know ourselves through taking a personality test. Each one of us was different which is interesting since we work together so well. We also explored the types of careers other people with our personalities have. We ended the day by building a walking robot which was one of the harder designs to do. We love a good challenge! Towers of FunBy Don, T. J., Oziel, and Hussein Mentor Michael Our first day of Discovery Academy was awesome! We started the day by creating structures out of uncooked noodles--ultimately we won the competition entirely! Each of us incorporated different designs into the project whilst learning about structural engineering principles. We moved on towards bristle-bot production though, which taught basic lessons about batteries and electrical principles. Everyone enjoyed that immensely, however, we moved on to straw rockets. We devised independent rockets which were capable of holding copious amounts of pressurized air! Everyone learned about rocket dynamics and aerodynamics, which was awesome. Overall, it was a great day! A Walk Through Our DayBy Jacob, Aiden, and Andrew Mentor Tori Today, the first thing we did was we got to know one another. We introduced ourselves and then did the marshmallow challenge. We got 3 cm because we made it too tall and it fell because our structure wasn't sound. We then went upstairs for breakfast. After that we discussed the equation that we can use tomorrow to calculate the height of the rocket tomorrow. We came up with the rules and expectations as a group and will sign off on them tomorrow. After that, we made the robots and had fun testing them out and battling other robots. If desired, the robots could be decorated. Lunch was held in the classroom and a discussion. After lunch we went outside and played Where is my Chicken which was super fun. The two last activities were straw rockets and planted seeds in gloves to experiment. We changed the wings, power, and angles of the rockets to try to hit targets and made predictions on which types of seeds will grow the fastest. The Fantastic Four and a Marshmallow MascotBy Gaby, Tammy, and Hannah Mentor Jasmine In the beginning of camp we had a marshmallow challenge which resulted in the creation of our group, The Fantastic Four's, mascot Oreo the Marshmallow. We were introduced to new people and have already made new and more friends. During the recycle activity we learned that you cant always trust the label. Even though it says recyclable sometimes that isn't the case. In the afternoon we made straw rockets and went through multiple trials to try and get them through the rings. We also made little bristle bots out of tooth brushes and batteries and a motor. Other students had battle bot competitions. We also explored the possible careers that we could go into through our mentor's presentation. We learned how important high school is and how it is not too early to be thinking about our futures. During free time, we learned how to play the game Where's My Chicken which was a lot of fun. StrawketsBy Emme, Katrina, and Andrew
Mentor Emily Today, we were assigned groups and discovered we all liked anime. Thus, or squad name: anime squad. We played a card game to get to know each other and then we were introduced to our first challenge, the spaghetti and marshmallow towers. Following the towers, we learned how to find the height without actually measuring it through the use of angles. We will be using this sometime this week for our water rockets. After towers we went to breakfast and had an assortment of breakfast foods. When we came back we learned what can and cannot be recycled. Then, we built bristle bots and Emee got freaked out many times by the motor. We went to lunch and then the park to play ultimate frisbee, where's my chicken, and attack on titans on the playground. When we got back inside, we built straw rockets... strawkets. And finally, we started our experiment for the next two weeks: seeds in a glove. Note: Photos for Day 10 were taken by camper, Kalyssa . Incredible11 By Alyssa, Alex, Ayden, and Charlotte Alyssa - "My favorite part was the water walk because we got to go in the stream and do hands on work instead of them bringing it to us." Alex says, "Yes my favorite thing was the nature walk because it was fun." Ayden says, "The kite [flying activity was his favorite] because it was fun running around and trying to make the [kite] fly, and also the challenge of getting it in the air was frustrating but fun." Charlotte says, "I didn't really have a favorite, but a highlight was the Bristle-bots and the nature walk. The Bristle-bots were little robots with toothbrushes, a motor, and a battery, as well as anything else that may be on the robot for decoration. We all made them a home and a family, and it was our first real bonding experience. The nature walk was a good way to get hands on work, and looking for a frog was really fun. We got to tread in the water and actually explore for ourselves instead of having things brought for us. All in all, the camp was really fun, and I don't regret it at all. (Although, the camp could have been moved back a couple hours)" Narwhal's Favorite Things By Jaden, Gibson, Jibran, and Amatullah We couldn't decide on just one thing to write about. We enjoyed so many different things from the Discovery Academy. Jaden's Favorite Part of DA: My favorite part was the designing the website. It is definitely something I can see myself doing in the future! Gibson's Favorite Part of DA: My favorite part was the bottle rockets, I enjoyed learning tangent and applying it to the rockets Jibran's Favorite Part of DA: My favorite part was building the robot, I liked it because it challenged my intellect and forced to use logic to solve the puzzling robot. Amatullah's Favorite Part of DA: My favorite part was when we built microscopes; it was an interesting project. Hawkz, with a Z, Signing Out! CAWWWWW By Paris, Ashlyn, Connor, and Tyler Paris- My favorite activity from camp was the water walk. I enjoyed going into the water and looking at cool organisms. I got scared of the leeches though. It was AMAZING! Ashlyn- My favorite part of the camp was making our own tails for the kites and seeing what made them flew better. It helped me teach others tricks to keep them in the air. Connor- My favorite activity was the nature walk. I found out what poison ivy looks like. I liked going out into nature and seeing what was out there. It was really relaxing. Tyler- My favorite part of camp was the water walk. I liked getting my feet dirty in the water. It was a perfect day and I had a lot of fun. Favorite Things By Nate, Miles, Brayan, Alex, and Anthony Nate: I really liked looking at the creatures in our nature walk. They were all really cool, especially the one that could walk on water. Miles: I liked the straw rocket. I liked it because we got to adjust the air pressure to make it fly different distances. I also really liked aiming for all the different hoops with my rocket. Brayan: My favorite was the water bottle rocket because we had to measure the amount of water we had inside and we also added wings to make it fly better. We found that the less water there was, the farther up it would go. Alex: I really liked making bristlebots because I was able to design it after I was done making it. Anthony: My favorite activity was our nature walk. I got to hold a snail in my hands and feel it slither around. By Marissa, Oziel, Pierre, and Tammy Marissa: My favorite part about today in specific was making our poster. I was super anxious because we hadn't started and I thought we wouldn't finish, but we did! We used all different colors of glitter glue, and the red one accidentally exploded. My favorite part about camp was the people that I got to meet and the mentors I got to work with. My favorite project was making the bristlebots. At first I had no idea what we were doing with toothbrush heads and this little thing with wires. We ended up using the motor and battery to make the bot move! I'm very anxious about the showcase. I'm definitely hoping to come back next year because I'm only in 7th grade. Oziel: I had fun at camp. Building the robot, making all these other things, and watching our seeds grow over 2 weeks. Tomorrow is the showcase and I don't want camp to be over. I'm nervous for my presentation tomorrow, but I prepared a lot today by practicing my speech. My most favorite part about camp was definitely building the robot. Something cool that I got to do besides the robot was make a bristlebot. I would love to come back next summer! Pierre: My favorite of all time was going to the stream because we went into some deeper parts and it felt good on our legs. Finding leeches on rocks was really cool. There were 2 big ones and we think that we saw a crayfish. Afterwards, we ate the best pizza ever. That made it one of the best days this summer. Also, meeting new friends was great. I talked to people that don't go to my same school. I got to meet my mentor, Madeline! Tammy: I really liked working on everything today. We made our showcase poster board, practiced presenting for tomorrow, and we published some websites on Weebly. We are waiting to do our twirlie contest! I'm going to miss everyone. I'm trying to convince them to work at BHS when they're teachers. I'm excited to check how many views I have on my website. I really had a lot of fun at recess with Collen, Marissa, and Kiana when we would sit in the tree and talk. Note: All photos on Day 9 were taken by one of our campers, Kalyssa. Math Sleepers Out! By Maritza, Jenny, Connor, and Hans Today, we had to finish our presentations about our future careers and our favorite project we liked to do. My favorite was when I met Kiana because she was the one that had help me when I needed help understanding things that I didn't understand: Maritza. My favorite part of today is when we make the poster together, we make the poster about " Wind turbine, and Robot" and my favorite part of 2 weeks are we can do all the project together, like team work, and I like this whole camp was I got help from many people in this WHOLE CAMP: Jenny. My favorite part of this whole camp was seeing the careers of different people, and how they got to the point they are at: Connor. My favorite part of the camp was simply just meeting everyone here. They are such great people, and I can really relate to them as well: Hans. MATH SLEEPERS OUT! Getting ready for Discovery Showcase By Zach, Camron, Faiz, and Mr. Katz Today we had a lot of fun. We finished our career projects and we also finished our college expectations. After the projects, we ate food and looked at the plants we grew. After that, we did a spinner challenge. Then we started doing our blog. The best experiences of Discovery Academy Zach: Throughout the two weeks, it was a fun and I had a good learning experience from my mentor Mr.Katz. He taught us about circuits and just all kinds of different electronics. But my favourite part about these two weeks was the part where we made new friends. I met a lot of new friends and I hope to see them again. Camron: Throughout camp, my favourite part was the water rockets. My favourite part of water rockets was the angled altitude meter you just point the meter to where the bottle is going and when it drops it calculates the angle. Faiz: In these 2 weeks my favourite activity has been coding on Scratch. This taught me a lot about computers and tech. Favorite Things By Julien, Colby, and Kevin Julien: One of my favorite things that we did at discovery academy was my group always liked to have fun during projects and how we always played Uno in our free time. Colby: My favorite part was when we did the water walk because we learned about our community and how we can take care of it as well as what organisms live in our nearby creeks. Kevin: Much like group my other group members, my favorite part of camp was the projects that me and other cooperative camp members worked on and playing uno with my group members and others. Awesome Experiments By Ryen, Kalik, Alan, and Alex The experiment we liked most about camp was the water rockets we did on the first day. We liked them because we found the whole experiment to be really exiting, watching them launch into the air and seeing all the other creative designs the other groups made. Our project was successful with a high height and good accuracy. After the first couple trials we understood what worked best and stayed with that design. Our second favorite project was the brissel bots. Final Blog Post
By David, Ethan, Rhea, and Fransisco David- My favorite activity to do was bristlebots because it was something completely different from what I've done. Connecting a battery to a motor is interesting because I never knew something so simple could connect with something else so complex. The camp was fun and interesting. I would give it a 10/10 would come again. Ethan- My favorite thing to do was also bristlebots or my brussel sprouts. It was fun and interesting to watch the robots vibrate. There is no other camp like this one. 7.8/10 IGN rating because there was too much water. Rheya- I liked the marble mazes which were group lesson plans because I got to work with Charlotte. It was a bit stressful, but getting through it and fighting through the problem was rewarding. I liked doing all the projects during camp because this was the only camp that we did things like this. Fransisco- My favorite thing was the bristlebots because they took time and effort to build, but once you go through all that, you really get to see how the negative and positive charges make the motor go. As well as the vibrations get amplified through the toothbrush bristles. The camp was definitely a unique experience. It was different from school, whereas school you just learn, while here, we do fun first and then learn. |
