Discovery Academy is a free science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) day camp being offered to middle school students within the Valley View School District. The 2018 Discovery Academy will take place on June 11-15 and June 18-22 from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm at Bolingbrook High School.
Discovery Academy was developed through a partnership between Valley View School District, Joliet Junior College, and Illinois State University. It was funded by the National Science Foundation. Discovery Academy was created in order to add more interest and diversity into the STEM. It hopes to encourage students to pursue STEM careers as well as build skills required in a modern society. |
Academy Directors
Dr. D"... when we look at who makes up the science community right now, there isn't much diversity. The vast majority of scientists and engineers are white, middle-class, Christian, most of them are male... and problems are solved more efficiently with different perspectives on the problem. I want to help bring girls and students of color into STEM and help make the science community more diverse to help new ideas sprout"
Mrs. K"My goal, always, is to have fun and to connect science to the real world."
"I think my favorite day was when we were shooting off the water bottle rockets. The activity was fun, but I liked it more because I could see how much the campers were enjoying it." |
Ms. C" My main goal would be to ... just get kids excited about science and math, and technology, engineering and all that."
"My favorite moment was releasing the ducks. We all worked together and.. everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do. We did something good for something else." Miss West |
